What is American Ginseng?

American ginseng is a species of ginseng known botanically as Panax quinquefolius. It is native to North America and has a long history of traditional use.

Although it is related to Asian or Korean ginseng, American ginseng is a different species. Korean and Asian ginseng are generally identified as Panax ginseng, while American ginseng is Panax quinquefolius.

The word "ginseng" alone does not always tell you which plant you are buying. Different species of ginseng can have different growing origins, characteristics and traditional uses.

A Plant Valued for Its Root

American ginseng is a slow-growing perennial plant. The root develops gradually over several years and is the part of the plant most commonly harvested and prepared for use.

Cultivated American ginseng is often grown under carefully managed conditions that provide shade similar to its natural woodland environment.

After harvest, the roots may be cleaned and dried before being sold as whole roots, slices or powder.

Where Does American Ginseng Grow?

American ginseng is native to the forests of eastern North America.

Today, it is also cultivated in recognised growing regions within the United States and Canada.

Wisconsin has a long history of commercial American ginseng cultivation and is one of the best-known regions for cultivated Panax quinquefolius.

Panvera's American ginseng is sourced from Marathon County, Wisconsin, a region closely associated with American ginseng cultivation.

What Does American Ginseng Taste Like?

American ginseng has a distinctive flavour that can vary depending on the root and how it is prepared.

It is commonly described as having an earthy and slightly bitter taste, often with a subtle natural sweetness.

The flavour may also vary depending on whether the ginseng is prepared as slices, whole root or powder.

The best form depends on how you prefer to prepare and enjoy American ginseng.

American Ginseng and Other Types of Ginseng

Not all products called "ginseng" come from the same species.

For example:

American Ginseng
Panax quinquefolius

Korean or Asian Ginseng
Panax ginseng

These plants belong to the same genus but are different species.

Understanding the botanical name is one of the simplest ways to know what type of ginseng you are buying.
